What ChatGPT Is and How It Works

⏱ 22 min read 💬 ChatGPT 👀 Free preview

ChatGPT, released by OpenAI in November 2022, is a conversational AI built on a large language model (LLM). It became the fastest-adopted consumer app in history because it does something that used to require a human writer, tutor or analyst: it understands your request in plain language and produces a fluent, structured answer in seconds.

Predicting the next word — at scale

GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. “Generative” means it creates new text. “Pre-trained” means it learned from an enormous amount of text — books, articles, websites, code — before you ever typed a word. “Transformer” is the neural-network architecture that lets it weigh how every word relates to every other word in your prompt.

At its core, the model does one deceptively simple thing: given all the text so far, it predicts the most likely next token (a token is roughly a word or word-piece). It then predicts the next, and the next — hundreds of times per answer. Fluency emerges from doing this extraordinarily well at massive scale.

How it learned to be helpful

  • Pre-training: the model absorbs patterns of language and world knowledge by predicting tokens across trillions of words.
  • Fine-tuning: human reviewers demonstrate ideal answers to real prompts.
  • RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback): humans rank candidate answers, and the model is optimized toward the responses people prefer — this is why ChatGPT feels polite and cooperative rather than like a raw autocomplete.

Why this matters for you

Understanding the mechanism makes you a better user. Because the model predicts likely text, it is brilliant at drafting, summarizing, translating, explaining and rewriting — and it can sound confident even when it is wrong. Treat it as a very fast, very well-read assistant that never gets tired but occasionally misremembers.

Key takeaway: ChatGPT generates plausible text word-by-word. It does not “look up” facts like a database — which is why your prompting and your fact-checking both matter.
