Lesson 1: What Midjourney Is and How It Works

Midjourney is an AI image generator created by Midjourney, Inc., an independent research lab based in San Francisco. Unlike the big tech giants, the lab is small, self-funded and famously focused on one thing: making the most beautiful images in the industry. It launched as an open beta in July 2022, and it made history later that year when a Midjourney image won first place at an art competition — sparking a global conversation about AI art.

From Discord to the web

For its first years, Midjourney lived entirely inside Discord: you typed a command in a chat channel and the bot generated images right there. That was unusual, but it made the tool social — you could watch other people’s prompts and results in real time and learn from them. Today Midjourney also offers a full web app where you can generate, browse, organize and edit your images, and many users now do most of their work there. Both surfaces run the same underlying models.

How diffusion works — noise to picture

Midjourney is built on a diffusion model. Imagine starting with a screen full of pure static — random noise. The model was trained on billions of image-and-caption pairs to learn how to remove noise step by step until a coherent picture emerges. When you type a prompt, the model uses your words as a guide for what the emerging image should look like at every denoising step:

Your text prompt is converted into numbers that describe the concept.
A canvas of random noise is created.
The model gradually denoises it over many steps, nudged by your prompt.
Details sharpen until a finished image appears.

Why prompts matter so much

Because your words steer every step of the denoising, the way you describe an image has enormous influence on the result. The same model can produce a dull snapshot or a gallery-worthy artwork from the same subject — purely based on how you write the prompt. That is why this course spends two full lessons on prompting before moving on to consistency and editing tools.
